Thin layer chromatography silica gel is a white powder, divided into ordinary and efficient two categories. The main component is SiO2·nH2O, insoluble in water, inorganic acid and other organic solvents, soluble in HF and concentrated caustic soda solution. It absorbs moisture in the air. Type H does not contain gypsum and organic adhesives; HF254 contains inorganic phosphors and appears yellow-green fluorescence at UV wavelength 254nm. Type G contains about 13% gypsum as a binder, slightly acidic; Type GF254 contains semi-aqueous gypsum and inorganic phosphors and displays yellow-green fluorescence at the UV wavelength of 254nm.
